Living in Los Angeles for more than 20 years I have made my way over to Venice Beach twice when the Hare Krishna’s “Festival of the Chariots” is going on. This festival has been going on since 1977 in Venice. The highlight of the event for me is seeing the all so colorful chariots (3 total) with fresh flowers towering above you while the Hare Krishna’s are chanting walking alongside them.
They throw flowers to the crowds and there is vegetarian food to sample when the parade concludes at the beach. The festival also includes dancing and booths explaining their religion and culture. Doing a little research I have discovered that they used to have elephants pulling the chariots when the festival began, that is until safety issues arose. So, if you are in the area this Sunday, August 4th, 2013, be sure to check out the festival of Chariots in Venice, California. The parade starts in Santa Monica and ends in Venice Beach.
For those of you who cannot make it here are some photos from the two times I have experienced “The Festival of the Chariots”.
